Oral Rehydration Therapy

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) came into common use in the 1970s and has played an important role in reducing the number of deaths in children under the age of five by  preventing and treating dehydration, especially due to diarrhea. ORT is a type of fluid replacement that involves drinking water with modest amounts of sugar and salts. The recommended formulation includes sodium chloride, sodium citrate, potassium chloride and glucose, and treatment should also include the use of zinc supplements.

ORT has the advantage of being less invasive than the other techniques used for fluid replacement, such as intravenous (IV) fluid replacement. It is also a highly efficient treatment as studies have shown that it can lower the mortality rate of diarrhea by as much as 93%.
