  • The Diploma in Caregiving course covers a broad range of topics that will help you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective care to clients or family members that you are your care.

    The course begins by introducing you to the roles and responsibilities of working as a carer, and in a care service team. You will study legal and ethical issues involved in caregiving and the importance of communicating well with clients, most of whom are older people and people with disabilities. The course also teaches you about verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, and you will learn how to manage your stress and time more effectively. 

    Next, the course teaches you about body mechanics, good posture and lifting loads safely. You will learn how to observe people for signs and symptoms of illness (mental and physical) and when to seek further medical assistance. You will learn the importance of reporting and documenting data as well as being culturally sensitive in areas such as gender, diet and religion.

    The course then focuses on providing care to clients who have been diagnosed with dementia. You will study, in detail, the health effects of ageing - effects on the brain and central nervous system; decreased sensitivity; learning dysfunction; insomnia. You will study the heart, lungs and circulatory system and health conditions such as angina and cardiovascular disease. Finally, you will learn about the process of dying - the physical stages of death; what to expect; how people grieve; common emotional responses and dealing with people close to the dying person.
