Energy system characteristics
We have three energy systems in the body that can provide energy in three
different ways. Each system provides energy at different rates, depending
on how quickly we want muscles to contract.
For example:
Muscular power and speed - we want muscles contracting as fast as
possible; therefore we need the ATP-ADP-ATP energy equation to occur as
fast as possible.
Marathon running - muscles don't need to contract as fast as possible;
however we want them to contract again and again for long periods of time,
therefore the energy equation has to occur many times.
Each energy system has characteristics that lend themselves to these
different types of requirements. Energy can be put back into the ADP to ATP
equation three different ways.
