    Acute (short term) and chronic (long term) responses: cardiovascular responses Cardiovascular responses Cardiac output(Q): Q = stroke volume x heart rate. At rest, the Q is 5-6 l/min. This increases to 30 l/min. at maximum intensity Stroke volume: The amount of blood pumped each beat is approximately 80 ml. This increases to 100-120 ml at maximum output. Remember though that this maximum output is achieved at approximately 40% of VO2 max. (this equates to an intensity that just enables you to talk while you are running) Heart rate: This increases linearly with exercise. Cardiac output is primarily produced by heart rate (certainly at higher intensities) as stroke volume peaks submaximally Venous return: This increase is due to increased muscular contraction, which is largely responsible for getting venous blood back to the heart Blood flow to working muscles: At rest, 15-20% of total blood flow goes to muscles. At maximal intensity this increases to 85-90% Oxygen differences between blood in the arteries and veins (click for details). A-VO2 difference: At rest, the difference in oxygen between the arteries and the veins is approximately 7 ml per 100 ml of blood. This increases with exercise up to 21-28 ml per 100 ml, as the muscles require more oxygen Blood pressure: The greatest increase is in systolic blood pressure, due to stroke volume and heart rate increases as well as vasodilation of the artieries.
