Within an organisation a Critical Operation is any factor (component, equipment, personnel, process, procedure, software, etc.) that is essential to business operation or to an organization. Simply put, the litmus test to identify Critical Operations can be: if this "thing"—a specific task, process, or system—broke or stopped working, would this hinder or cripple the continued ability of the organization to meet its goals?
Those working in Critical Operations are tasked with ensuring that the critical operations are working at all times, and in the event of a systems failure they should be able to recover the system or move to a backup system as quickly and efficiently as possible. This requires that the systems and documented, from schematics and operational instructions to plans for how to recover the system if need be. The also need to understand the interconnectivity of the systems so that the can anticipate any knock-on effect of the failure of one system on the other systems in the organisation.
