Alison Launches Free ISO 39001 Course to Help Fleet Safety Managers Build Systematic Approaches to Road Traffic Safety

Saturday, 31st October 2026

New CPD-Accredited Advanced Certificate Course Introduces the ISO 39001 Standard to Transport and Fleet Professionals Responsible for Managing Road Safety Risk

Road traffic crashes kill approximately 1.19 million people every year, according to the World Health Organization — making road traffic injuries one of the leading causes of death globally, and the leading cause among people aged between 5 and 29. The majority of those deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, but the risk is not confined by geography: for organisations that operate vehicle fleets, road traffic incidents represent one of the most significant occupational safety exposures their workers face. Fleet operators — in logistics, utilities, construction, public services, and across the broader transport sector — carry substantial legal, financial, and reputational responsibility for what happens on the road.

ISO 39001, the international Road Traffic Safety Management System standard, was developed to give organisations a structured, systematic framework for reducing that risk. Built on the same Plan-Do-Check-Act approach used by ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, it provides a recognised basis for identifying road safety hazards, setting objectives, assigning leadership accountability, and driving continuous improvement in road traffic safety performance.

Alison, one of the world's largest free online learning platforms, is responding with the launch of its new ISO 39001 Road Traffic Safety Management for Fleet Safety Managers course. Free, CPD-accredited, and pitched at Advanced level, the course gives fleet safety managers the knowledge to understand, implement, and audit an ISO 39001 management system — and to make a credible internal case for certification.

Understanding the Standard and Identifying Relevant Risks

The course opens with the purpose and structure of ISO 39001, placing it in the context of other ISO management system standards and explaining what it requires of organisations that adopt it. Learners move from this foundation into the practical work of risk identification — understanding how to assess the road traffic safety risks and opportunities that are relevant to a specific transport or fleet operation, and how those risks should inform the scope and priorities of a management system.

Leadership, Policy, and Planning

A significant section of the course addresses what ISO 39001 requires from leadership. Learners explore the responsibilities that senior leaders must take on to establish and maintain a meaningful Road Traffic Safety policy, and the steps involved in translating that policy into concrete RTS objectives and action plans. The course draws a clear distinction between proactive approaches to road safety — embedding risk controls before incidents occur — and reactive approaches that wait for events to trigger a response, making the case for why proactive management is both the standard's expectation and the more effective operational model.

Audit, Review, and the Business Case for Certification

The final section covers the internal audit and management review requirements of ISO 39001, equipping learners to assess their management system's effectiveness and ensure it continues to meet the standard's requirements over time. The course also examines real-world approaches to road safety taken by leading vehicle manufacturers, and gives learners the tools to articulate the business case for ISO 39001 certification within their own organisation — addressing the safety, legal, and commercial arguments that make the case for investment.

Mike Feerick, Founder and CEO of Alison, said:

"Fleet safety is one of the most consequential areas of occupational risk that organisations face — and one of the most manageable, when approached systematically. ISO 39001 gives organisations a framework that is proven, internationally recognised, and directly applicable to the risks that fleet operators deal with every day. This course makes that framework accessible to the professionals who need it most."

ISO 39001 Road Traffic Safety Management for Fleet Safety Managers is free to access and CPD-accredited, with a certificate available to learners who successfully complete the course. It is suited to fleet safety managers, transport operations professionals, health and safety managers with fleet responsibility, and anyone working towards ISO 39001 implementation or certification within their organisation.
