This course first introduces you to the key devices found on Local Area Networks (LANs) such as routers, switches and hubs. You will learn about how they allow for efficient communication on the LAN. The course then discusses IP addresses and how they are broken down into Host ID and Network ID components. It then goes on to explain the seven different layers of the OSI Model.
You will learn about the function and structure of the layers and how data is through them to allow for device communication. You will contrast and compare the function and structure of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and will learn about DNS server computer and the Default gateway. The course introduces you to TCP/IP tools such as ipconfig, ping and command prompt. More advanced TCP/IP tools such as Netstat, Pathping, Nslookup, Telnet, NbtStat and Netsh are also investigated.
Next, you will learn about the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol; a client/server protocol which enables certain computers to obtain IP addresses automatically. This is a protocol within the TCP/IP suite that authenticates and encrypts IP packets. You will learn about Routing which is the managing of data flow between routers or hosts. You will look at common dynamic routing protocols such as Link state routing (Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)) and Distance vector routing (Routing Information Protocol (RIP)).
You will then look at Firewalls, the most commonly used type of security device in an organization's perimeter. You will learn about how they protect networks from unwanted intrusions and malicious attacks. Finally, you will learn about the Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), and the Network Intrusion Prevention System (NIPS) which can redirect, detain or remove malicious traffic.
