Are Alison’s courses useful?
Our courses are taught by subject matter experts and are certified by the UK independent certification body CPD. They should equip you with the knowledge you need to take formal exams in a given subject or support you if you want to explore a specific area in more detail or simply update your training. They aim to make high quality learning freely available, wherever you are in the world.
What is the difference between a therapist and counselling?
It’s like the difference between a fully qualified teacher and a tutor. A psychotherapist has extensive, formal training and generally requires a licence to practise. They can treat clients with complex mental health problems and disorders. A counsellor plays a supportive, listening role and may refer clients to psychotherapists or psychiatrists if they require particular therapeutic treatment.
Do counsellors have to be registered?
There are different regulations depending on where you live. Generally, you should find out whether there is a regulatory body in your country and follow their guidelines to register as a practitioner. Often this involves sitting a test which you can study for independently.
