Why is insurance important?
For many people, paying an insurance premium monthly is a grudge they would rather not make. While it is understandable that you may want to spend the money elsewhere, getting to grips with insurance can help you better manage your life and assets. Insurance is essentially a future payment into a pool of collective money against a risk that may or may not happen. For example, if you pay a small amount in case you are robbed of all your possessions, would you be able to pay for everything you need without that payout? It could ruin you financially to do so.
You may not legally own a car or property without insurance in many places. If you run a business, you may have to have insurance to cover the premises, staff and customers as part of your licence or loan. You may pay insurance in case you fall ill, can’t work or pass away so your family can survive.
What skills do I need as an insurance broker or agent?
The role requires a mixture of hard and soft skills. These include:
Hard skills: Knowledge of the law, how to file documentation and calculate risk accurately so you can charge suitable premiums that your market can bear.
Soft skills: Empathy for clients in tragic circumstances, listening and communication skills, the ability to predict human nature and detect a fraudulent claim, and staying abreast of breaking news such as earthquakes, storms, outbreaks and even stock market downturns.
