1. How did you first come across Alison?

I first came across Alison while searching online for free courses that could complement my B.Sc. Agriculture studies at Centurion University. As a student, I wanted to build hands-on, job-relevant skills without the cost barrier that certification courses often bring. Alison stood out because of its range of free learning opportunities. After exploring topics from farm management to sustainable design, I enrolled to see how the courses could add to what I was already learning in my degree.

2. What did you study? List the courses and tell us why you studied those courses in particular.

I studied three Alison courses alongside my B.Sc. Agriculture degree:

  1. Sustainable Architecture: Energy Efficiency and Quality - I chose this course to understand how energy-efficient design principles can apply to rural and farm infrastructure. Sustainable building practices are closely connected to the agro-industrial systems I am interested in.

  2. Farm Management and Maintenance: This course directly aligned with my agriculture studies and deepened my understanding of how to run and maintain farm operations efficiently.

  3. Diploma in Caregiving: I wanted to develop skills beyond agriculture to support community-level work and better understand health and welfare needs in rural settings. This course enabled me to do that.

3. How has learning on Alison helped your career?

My B.Sc. Agriculture studies gave me a theoretical foundation, while Alison helped me connect that theory to real-world practice.

The Farm Management and Maintenance course gave me practical frameworks I could apply during my summer internship as a Block Agriculture Officer in Khallikote, where I worked on millet and dhanicha seed distribution and fertiliser activities. That structured knowledge made me more confident in making field-level decisions instead of simply following instructions.

The Sustainable Architecture course also broadened the way I think about agro-industrial systems. I now look beyond crops and yields to consider how infrastructure and processes can be made more efficient and sustainable over the long term. That perspective has influenced how I approach fieldwork and community projects through my Agro-Industrial Awareness program.

Beyond individual skills, Alison helped me develop the habit of identifying knowledge gaps and filling them independently, for free and on my own schedule. I now carry that mindset into every new project and internship.

4. What advice would you give to others who have not yet found Alison or free online learning?

Free does not mean lesser. I built job-relevant skills alongside my degree at zero cost. If you are a student, do not wait until you "have time". Even an hour a week on a focused course adds up faster than you might expect.
