This course explores the experiences of people on the autism spectrum, starting with a definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and identifying its signs and symptoms. We discuss the suspected causes of autism, its various types, and approaches used to support individuals, particularly children, with autism.

Play is a vital part of a child's development. This course examines how children with autism engage in play and compares their play behaviour to that of children without the disorder. We also focus on social skills and how parents can support children with autism in developing them. A person-centred approach is emphasised throughout the course. We also cover how ASD is diagnosed in both children and adults.

While children with autism may possess significant communication skills and talents, they often need additional support to develop these abilities. We explain how individuals with autism communicate and provide effective communication strategies. The course also explores cognitive styles, functions, and challenging behaviours. The final section discusses the role of public health campaigns in raising autism awareness, including World Autism Awareness Day and the Autism Awareness Campaign in the UK.
