Biology - Cell Division

Learn more about mitosis, meiosis, embryonic stem cells, and how cells divide and replicate with this biology course.

Publisher: Khan Academy
In this free online biology course you will learn about cell division and replication. This course will explain the complex processes of cell division in detail. You will learn about mitosis and meiosis and the phases that occur in each of these processes. You will then learn that in the early stages of development, embryonic cells can generate all cell types in the body. You will also look at how cells divide and replicate.

Cell division is the process cells go through to divide. There are different types of cell division, depending upon what type of organism is dividing. This course will introduce you to cell division. You will study mitosis which is the process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells and meiosis which is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. You will also learn about sexual reproduction.

Embryonic stem cells(ESCs) are stem cells derived from the undifferentiated inner mass cells of a human embryo. They are capable of growing into all derivatives of the three primary germ layers which are the ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. This course will give you a better understanding of embryonic stem cells. You will also look into cancer which is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. You will also learn how damaged cells develop and spread.

The study of cell division has big relevance to the health, well-being, and biology of all organisms. This course will give you a better understanding of the growth and development of these organisms. You will also learn the importance of cell division for the future of disease and injury repair via stem cell therapies. So, check out the course and learn more about mitosis, meiosis, and their role in cell division and replication.
