Course Information

Learn how to provide pain relief, improve strength, increase range of motion and perform types of physical therapy.

This free online course for caregivers covers all aspects of ensuring the health and safety of vulnerable clients of all ages. The course begins by teaching you how different types of diseases and infections are transmitted and how to protect yourself while supporting clients or patients who are ill with common ailments like scabies or more serious conditions such as TB, Hepatitis B and HIV. The next section of the course deals with your charge’s basic needs for food and water and you will learn the importance of healthy levels of nutrition and how to spot the signs of dehydration. Caregivers often look after clients with special dietary requirements and you will learn about these as well as essential food safety practices that can help safeguard your client’s health.

Now that you have a thorough grounding in infection control and nutrition, the course will teach you how to plan for and deal with a range of emergencies. You will learn how to call for emergency assistance and remain calm and professional throughout. The course delves into many scenarios that caregivers can encounter, such as allergic reactions and choking, diabetic emergencies and heat exhaustion and how to deal with those. You will also learn how to identify and respond should your client suffer a stroke or a seizure. Many caregivers support elderly people for whom falls can be particularly hazardous and this course will teach you how to react and safely help the client. The final section of the course deals with fire safety measures and the different types of fire extinguisher that are available, depending on whether a fire is caused by combustible materials, flammable liquids or electric equipment.

Whether you are already working in a care environment, or are considering a career in this essential sector, this course will give you invaluable insights and information that will help keep you and your clients safe. You will know how to avoid spreading infection, how to deal with a crisis and be able to approach any caregiving situation with confidence.
