Course Information

Learn how to improve indoor air quality in this free online course that explains how to use HVAC equipment and systems.

The importance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems has significantly grown due to today’s increased focus on energy conservation, costs and the significance of providing a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. This course provides a strong foundation in HVAC systems that you can use to become an HVAC engineer or technician. We begin with an introduction to HVAC systems and explore their history and applications. We cover fundamental concepts such as the processes behind air conditioning (AC) and the basics of thermodynamics, including the different types of heat transfer like sensible, latent and total heat.

The course then explores the intricate relationship between air and moisture. We discuss the psychrometric chart and examine temperature variations and various HVAC processes found in it. The focus then shifts to air conditioning systems specifically designed for HVAC technicians. We explain how to calculate heat and fluid flow for air conditioning and examine the AC refrigeration cycle and the various AC cooling systems available.

We then address the critical aspect of indoor air quality and discuss pollutants and contaminants and their sources. We show you how to control and improve air quality by employing source control, filtration and dilution techniques. Lastly, we lay out the process of selecting HVAC and unitary systems. This course has no prerequisites and is part of a wide range of courses offered by the Academy of Skills, an institution committed to meticulously crafting courses to ensure the optimal delivery of knowledge and information.
