Founded in 1919 in the USA, Junior Achievement has worked in Ireland since the 1990s with industry and education partners to inspire young people to realise their potential by valuing their education and developing the skills and attitudes needed to shape their own future.Junior Achievement Ireland's (JAI) twin aims are to encourage students to stay in school and to inspire them to maximise the opportunities that their education provides. Programmes begin at primary school level, teaching children how they can have an impact on the world around them and continue through second level, helping students to see a future for themselves in the world of work. More than 65 000 students participate in JAI educational activities annually because of partnerships with educators in about 500 schools and the support of around 180 of Ireland’s leading businesses.

A learning-by-doing-method is the main design feature of each programme, so the students are engaged in well-designed activities to achieve the desired learning outcomes. At the same time, the emphasis for volunteers is on the importance of role models working with the students and making a positive impact. Volunteers are encouraged and prompted to share their experiences and career stories in an age-appropriate fashion as they progress through the content, which is covered in the training and materials provided.

JAI provides all the training, learning materials and support required by industry and education partners to enable volunteers from the world of work to facilitate access for students to structured enterprise, science, maths, and life skills programmes for primary and second level students. JA teams ensure that volunteers are recruited, vetted, equipped, trained, and supported to deliver purpose-designed programmes that complement the formal curriculum. All equipment and learning materials, which the students may require are provided, whether the volunteer is facilitating programmes in the students’ classrooms or engaging with students via video conference, or in other learning environments such as hosting workshops in the workplace or during events staged in conjunction with third-level institutions.
