Free CPD-Accredited Course Offers Practical, Everyday Support for a Condition That Affects Hundreds of Millions of People

Alison has launched a new CPD-accredited course: Guide to Understanding and Managing Depression. This free online course helps people make sense of depression in plain, practical terms — what it is, how it can show up day to day, and what to actually do about it. Reviewed by psychologist and content writer Kashmaila Gulzar, the course focuses on real coping tools rather than abstract theory, and is designed for anyone who has felt stuck in a low mood without a clear sense of why or what might help.

The course walks learners through the fundamentals: recognising common signs of depression, understanding the factors that can contribute to it, and using simple, evidence-informed coping strategies in daily life. By the end, learners will feel more confident recognising the signs in themselves or others, know when a low mood may call for professional support, and have practical tools for managing day-to-day symptoms in the meantime.

A Condition Far More Common Than Its Stigma Suggests

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that around 332 million people globally live with depression — roughly 5.7% of adults — and that it affects women about 1.5 times more often than men. Despite how widespread it is, WHO also notes that even in high-income countries, only about one in three people with depression receive any mental health treatment, held back by a combination of limited access to care, a shortage of trained providers, and persistent social stigma. For many people, understanding what depression actually looks like — and what to do about it — remains the first, hardest-to-reach step.

Why Understanding Depression Changes How People Cope

Depression is often misunderstood as something a person should simply be able to "snap out of," which can make an already difficult experience more isolating. Learning to recognise real symptoms, understand common contributing factors, and apply small, consistent coping strategies gives people a concrete starting point — something to do, rather than just something to endure. That same understanding also equips friends, family members, and colleagues to respond with more patience and less guesswork when someone close to them is struggling.

Mike Feerick, Founder and CEO of Alison, stated: "Depression touches an enormous number of people, directly or through someone they love, yet clear, practical information about it is still harder to find than it should be. This course gives people real, usable tools — and we believe that kind of support should be free and available to everyone."

This launch expands Alison's portfolio of mental health and wellbeing courses, continuing its mission to make high-quality, accessible learning available to everyone, regardless of their background or budget.
