The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 700,000 people die from suicide worldwide every year and that on average a person attempts suicide every three seconds. Every suicide is a tragedy that impacts family members, friends, colleagues and the wider community. This psychology course explains how to support individuals and prevent and respond to suicidal behaviour. We provide guidelines and raise awareness of suicide prevention methods to help you respond in various potentially deadly situations.

On a day-to-day basis, people have contact with many individuals within their community. At times, some of these people may be at risk of death by suicide or know someone who is at risk. Although there are many factors that influence suicidal behaviour, maintaining close relationships with others, feeling part of a community and having access to support are strong protectors against suicide. We outline the risk and protective factors and show you how to identify the warning signs of suicidal behaviour. 

This psychology course introduces the steps to take when responding to specific situations. We discuss how to support people who feel suicidal and go through the emergency guidelines for suicide prevention. We also discuss the importance of seeking support and practising self-care to maintain mental health.
