How much energy does it take to power a home, a school or even an entire city? How would you go about calculating that? Our production and use of energy, most of which comes from fossil fuels, is contributing to climate change. In this course, you will learn about the fundamentals of physics and energy before going on to use formulas for calculating energy and energy efficiency. You will begin with physics and the basic laws of thermodynamics, before covering a key concept of scientific and engineering studies, standard measurements. This will include the seven S.I. measurements that all other measurements are derived from, as well as a handful of the previously mentioned derived units. When you are either walking or driving around town do you know what kind of energy you are demonstrating?, Energy comes in five different types that will be taught in this course. As you continue you will also study examples of these types, the formulas for calculating each energy type and step-by-step examples for using these formulas.
The next section of this course begins with a deep dive into temperature. You will focus on the three scales of temperature that are most commonly used, with a focus mainly on one scale, in particular, Celsius. Energy terms that will continue to be used throughout the course are then introduced to you before you cover joules and the variations of the basic energy unit. Another topic that is covered in great detail is power. This continues the focus on joules as you also begin focusing on watts and how you would convert energy calculations between the two units. Practical energy calculations, such as a power station's output and efficiency will be introduced. Following this, you will be provided with example calculations that are supported by step-by-step instructions that you need to follow for every calculation. As you progress through these examples you will be introduced to two subscripts that are commonly used in energy calculations.
This course finishes with thermodynamic calculations of various materials. Starting off, you will learn all there is about specific heat capacity (cp), along with the cp of certain materials. Thermal conductivity is also covered. Here you will be introduced to k, R and U values and how to calculate each value. Each of these topics is once again supported by descriptive examples that demonstrate exactly how to calculate these values. You will also learn about the efficiency of energy output and the coefficient of performance of heat pumps. Throughout this course, you will form a solid understanding of energy calculations, from the standard units of measurement to the various formulas used to convert between different measurement units.
