Course Information

This free online sustainability course explains how to control the effects of air pollution on global climate change.

‘Air pollution’ refers to the contamination of the atmosphere by harmful substances that originate from both natural sources and human activities. These harmful substances, commonly known as ‘air pollutants’, may include particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and ozone. Each pollutant has unique properties and sources and air pollutants like carbon dioxide and methane act as greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and exacerbate global warming.

This sustainability course begins with the fundamentals of air pollution control. We study the types of air pollutants and outline control and mitigation strategies like the implementation of air quality standards and regulations, air pollution modelling and dispersion and indoor air quality improvement techniques. We examine emission sources and control technologies before discussing industrial emission control, vehicle emission control and more. We also identify various types of air pollution and the strategies for controlling them. These types include particulate matter, acid rain, ozone, smog, mercury and other toxic air pollutants.

The course then investigates the role of air quality monitoring networks in air pollution monitoring and management. We identify prominent air quality monitoring networks and outline the benefits of risk assessment, emergency response and environmental impact assessments. We also lay out the benefits of an integrated quality management process. Finally, we review the emerging issues in air pollution control and emphasize the impact of public engagement and policy advocacy in air pollution management. Air pollution is a serious environmental and public health issue so sign up for this sustainability course to learn how policy, legislation, technology and public awareness can play a role in managing the effects of air pollution.
