Course Information

This free online law course explores the fundamental legal principles and practices that drive the UK’s judicial system.

Our daily interactions, whether they occur at home or in public, often involve interactions with the law. It therefore behoves the average person to understand how the law works in order to behave legally and be aware of their rights when they suffer because of the illegal actions of others. Legislation plays a significant role in establishing order in society and providing recompense to victims. Edukators London designed this basic legal studies course to introduce the concepts of law and explain how the judicial system works in the United Kingdom.

Our lessons begin with an introduction to the hierarchy of the courts and statutes as we discuss the Literal Rule, Golden Rule and Mischief Rule. We examine various approaches to legal interpretation to help you understand how and why judges are being increasingly influenced by the European method of statutory interpretation, which means decisions are based more on the intent of a piece of legislation rather than just the literal meaning of the words written as statutes.

Offences fall into various categories and there are certain factors that judges must consider when they pass sentences. We therefore explore public and private law while examining the process of sentencing, the appeals process and the concept of Juridical Precedent. We also analyse the structure of the European Union (EU) and review the responsibilities of the EU Parliament and Court of Justice. This legal studies course suits anyone interested in a legal career but also benefits Britons who want to understand the role of the legal system in the UK. Sign up to learn how to stay on the right side of the law and protect your rights.
