Course Information

Explore the political system of the UK and the origins of its elements in this free online political science course.

This political science course covers the UK’s politics and governance. We describe the activities of the State, the dynamics of power and the connection between the government and its citizens. We first highlight the original concept of the devolution of central power to various parts of the country and identify the characteristics of the quasi-federal UK system. We compare ‘devolved’ and ‘reserved’ powers. The course examines structures and functions of the Scottish Parliament and Government, the Welsh Assembly and Government and the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive.

We cover various fundamental political ideas such as legitimacy, power and authority. Understanding the institutions and organisational structure of the UK government can help you to apply various political and governmental ideas to Britain. We discuss the development and historical significance of the UK Parliament, its composition and the roles played by the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

This political science course explores the nature and theoretical aspects of the British constitution. We outline the sources of the largely unwritten UK constitution, which include statutes, common law, conventions, European Union (EU) laws and authoritative works as opposed to a single document. We examine the establishment, functions and role of the UK’s Supreme Court and the judicial system. Our final section highlights the roles and responsibilities of the Prime Minister, Cabinet and its committees. Britain has a complex and fascinating political history that has affected governments all over the world so sign up for this course to enrich your understanding of the UK’s government and political dynamics.
