Course Information
Build practical GIS skills from spatial foundations to QGIS analysis, automation, and responsible GeoAI.
This online course takes learners from the foundations of geographic information systems to practical spatial analysis in QGIS. It explains how location, attributes, coordinate reference systems, map projections, scale, resolution, vector data, and raster data work together to support a reliable GIS project. Learners build a practical understanding of how geographic data is structured, prepared, displayed and interpreted.
Learners then apply these ideas to buffers, overlays, spatial queries, interpolation, terrain analysis, zonal statistics, raster reclassification, suitability modelling, web maps and repeatable models. The course also introduces modern GIS platform choices, coding and automation support, beginner-level GeoAI and practical ways AI can assist GIS work without replacing professional judgement. A short history of mapping shows how earlier spatial records and manual overlays developed into digital GIS.
Throughout the course, the emphasis remains on choosing methods for a clear geographic question, checking data and assumptions, inspecting outputs, documenting workflows and understanding limitations. Learners are encouraged to use tools thoughtfully, verify results against evidence and keep control of the final analysis rather than simply running tools without understanding their purpose or results.
