Course Information

Learn essential skills for providing psychosocial support to promote the healing and empowerment of GBV survivors.

Psychosocial support describes activities that attend to the social and psychological needs of individuals, families, and communities. Did you know that anyone can experience Gender-Based Violence (GBV) irrespective of their age, ethnicity, cultural, religious, economic status and area of residence? This course provides in-depth training on the provision of psychosocial support to survivors of GBV. We explain the principles of psychosocial support and the psychological, emotional, and social impacts of GBV.

The course then looks at the GBV referral pathway to safely link survivors and those at risk of GBV to supportive and competent services. Learn how to deliver compassionate and survivor-centered care. We cover the psychological first-aid (PFA) action principles of look, listen and link and examples of complex reactions by people in distress. Discover why we need PFA and who can provide it, including tips for handling children in distressing situations.

Finally, we will delve into the various forms of self-care to promote your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. We explore the different tools for self-care such as magazines, websites and mobile apps. Through theoretical knowledge and practical skills, students will be equipped to support survivors in a manner that promotes healing and empowerment. This comprehensive course is ideal for social workers, counsellors, healthcare providers, and anyone involved in supporting GBV survivors.
