How do states regulate homeschooling?

Homeschooling is legal in every state, however, the degree of regulation varies from very little to quite high. Each state is different so be sure to check the requirements for homeschooling where you are. Likewise, if college is part of your learning pathway, be sure to check with the colleges where you intend to apply, for their specific entrance requirements.

How are Alison courses selected?

We have selected our courses based on a typical four-year high school diploma which meets the A-G minimum requirements for State College entrance in California and many other states. This means our courses fall into the following categories: 
A. History/Social Science - pupils should study at least two years of history, including one of World history and one of US history and/or Government.
B. English - 4 years of college preparatory English
C. Mathematics - 3+ years including  Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.
D. Laboratory Science - 2+ years of laboratory science in at least 2 of the 3 disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
E. Language Other than English - 2+ years of the same language (other than English)
F. Visual and Performing Arts - 1+ years of dance, music, or visual arts.
G. College Preparatory Elective - 1+ years chosen from additional A-F courses beyond those used to satisfy the requirements above, or courses that have been approved elective classes.
 
Each homeschool is responsible for working out its own system of credits, using time spent studying or learning objectives achieved. Our courses are suggestions to help you plan your homeschool program and are not strict guidelines.
