Global Health Initiative: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Awareness

This course begins with an introduction to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. You will study the two main types of COPD which are Chronic bronchitis which involves a long-term cough with mucus and Emphysema which involves damage to the lungs over time. You will look into their causes and symptoms, and study the complications and risk factors associated with the diseases. In addition, you will learn how they are diagnosed and look into the tests used for diagnosis.

You will then look into how COPD can be successfully prevented or treated. You will learn that by quitting smoking, avoiding secondhand smoke, avoiding air pollution, avoiding occupational exposures, and knowing your family history, you can avoid or prevent the disease. With this course, you will also learn how to live successfully with COPD, and how family, friends and colleagues can cope with and support a patient with the disease.
