The Autism Friendly Schools Project

A wide variety of diseases collectively known as autism, or autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), are characterised by difficulties with social skills, repetitive activities, speech, and nonverbal communication. We begin this child psychology course by describing the impact of autism on young children and their experience in school. We then explain why it is important to identify the basic characteristics of children with autism. We provide you with answers to questions such as ‘What is it really like to live with autism?’ and 'What do schools need to do to become autism-friendly?’

This child psychology course explores the long-term consequences of the various types of autism. We show you how to identify and decode the language of children with autism. This course also provides some information regarding body language in children with autism. We provide answers to questions like ‘How does the tone of voice affect children with autism?’ and ‘How important is clean and clear communication in children with autism?'

We outline the fundamental concepts you need to understand to appreciate how children affected by autism can develop in school. We explain how to work towards an inclusive culture in an autism-friendly school, in a way that supports all children.
