Description

This course will begin by introducing you to factors affecting the world’s population growth. You will be enlightened on the changes in global consumption, the resultant effect on the level of waste generation, and how to measure this to sustain the earth’s natural resources. You will explore the science of the earth’s natural system which involves the interactions among the major components of earth’s system like the biosphere, atmosphere, and energy systems. Also, you will discuss the biosphere’s impact on the environment and the meaning of environmental sustainability.

The course goes on further to explore the major roles materials play in buildings. You will learn the importance of using green materials in building instead of conventional materials which are detrimental to the environment. You will learn about the energy in building, how to calculate ecological footprint, which is a measure of humanity’s demand on nature, and the raw materials used for cement production. Also, you will study the composition of the fuel used in cement and the physical and chemical characterization of materials.

Lastly, you will be introduced to the mineralogical characterization of materials and design optimization of buildings along with solar energy, and green building rating systems. This will improve your understanding of insulated concrete form, insulated form, and modular construction. By the end of this course, you will improve your knowledge of how sustainable building materials can contribute to lessening the impact of environmental degradation. This course will be of immense interest to students, researchers, ecologists, environmentalists, and anyone with an interest in sustainability practices.
