• Identify the structure and naming conventions of benzene and the phenol
• Explain the reactions of arenes: halogenation, nitration, sulfonation and Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylations
• Discuss preparing benzyl chloride, alcohol & benzoic acid and the synthesis of salicylic acid (Kolbe-Schmitt reaction)
• Describe the formation of amines, the preparation of amides and how they undergo acid and basic hydrolysis
• Classify amino acids, summarize their various types, their naming and structure
• Outline synthetic polyamides properties and applications, and the characteristics of Terylene, and Poly(lactic acid)
