Robert Klonoski: teaching you about the world of work
Professor Robert Klonoski taught at Mary Baldwin University’s undergraduate college of business for 13 years and has also taught Governance at the University’s Graduate School of Business. His areas of research include work motivation, organisational behavior, human resource management and organisational governance.
Before joining Alison, I taught at several colleges and universities, including the University of the District of Columbia, the University of Virginia, and Mary Baldwin University, where I was an Associate Professor, teaching both professional studies and in the undergraduate college of business. At Mary Baldwin, I wrote the curriculum for the MBA programme which launched in 2017. I am the author of 12 peer-reviewed journal articles and one book, Work Benefits in America: A Societal Perspective.
My expertise in business came through education as well as practical experience. I earned degrees in law (J.D.) and in management (DMgt). After graduating from the MBA program at the University of Connecticut, I worked in finance, marketing and new product development at Citigroup in New York and later in strategic planning at JP Morgan Chase. After 15 years in banking, I started a catering firm in Greenwich, Connecticut which I ran for 7 years. After selling that business, I undertook doctoral studies in management at UMUC and began teaching at several colleges and universities, where I was also able to do research and publish a number of works. I taught courses in several areas of management including strategic management and organisational behavior.
I first came across Alison while looking for a course in French. I found the format very easy to work with and thought that it would be a great platform for enabling people to learn more about the topics in which I could share what I had learned. Working with Alison has been very easy. The staff there are a pleasure to work with. The process for setting up a new course is straightforward and the people at Alison are very willing to help.
I like to write my courses from a practical perspective. When a person works in a business, he or she may learn how things are organized, managed, and governed from situational experiences. What my courses are intended to do is to put these experiences in perspective, and to show students the “bigger picture”, hopefully preparing them for things that may develop in their futures as they grow in their careers. Right now, I have only published one course on Alison, which is in Corporate Governance. This is based on a course I used to teach in an MBA program and is challenging. It is intended for people who have some background in business or law. Hopefully, learners find the material practical and useful, and if it helps them in understanding their work environments, I feel that I’ll have been successful.
