Cyber Security Skills for the Workplace of the Future

A report in Forbes magazine has debunked the ‘myth’ that, “85% of the jobs that today’s learners will be doing in 2030 haven’t been invented yet”. It says that the figure has evolved from a misquoted 1999 US Department of Labor report which actually made the point that in the midst of the creation of new high-tech jobs, ‘most current jobs will endure’. While that is reassuring for the majority of the population, it remains true that the world of work is evolving at a rapid pace and that many of us are, in fact, working in jobs that didn’t exist as the new millennium dawned.

Uncharted Territory

The new frontier for those carving out careers in this previously uncharted territory is digital technology. As more work moves online, demand grows for ever more sophisticated means of protecting a commodity that’s as precious as gold to old-time settlers - information. And the outriders keeping everything safe? Cybersecurity professionals. There are multiple routes to a career in cybersecurity. Many of the free courses on Alison have been tailor-made to help our 20 million learners worldwide shift into these roles or pursue further cybersecurity certifications once they are in the sector.

Many Roads to Travel

Ironically, the year 1999, when that often-misquoted US report was published, was the year that the concept of cloud computing took shape. It has become one of the most important of the new technologies, along with edge computing, which is performed at or near the source of the data. In both instances, cybersecurity training must evolve to meet the growing threat of attacks. Roles and responsibilities vary within the rapidly growing cybersecurity sector. They include anything from setting up secure systems to dealing with security breaches or incidents to testing an application software or IT system for vulnerabilities, sometimes by getting inside the mind of a hacker. You may be working for a private company or a public sector or government organization and carrying out a role that nobody else is doing.

7 ‘Hacks’ You Should Know When Considering a Career in Cyber Security

Alison

Dedication

Cybercriminals never rest, and it takes commitment, imagination, and a passion for technology to stay one step ahead of them. Being flexible and able to adapt to new challenges is an important quality for a career in IT security. Many of those working in the field cite the constant need to keep learning and discovering as one of its attractions.

Teamwork

While ethical hackers and penetration testers can often work alone, being a good team player will also improve your results as sharing know-how can be invaluable.

Analytical Thinking

To get ahead in application security, network defence, intrusion detection or incident handling, you need a forensic approach to analysing and making right any issues. Documenting any incidents and the action taken is important for ensuring there are no repeats. Sometimes, documentation can be key to prosecutions.

Worthwhile Training

Some of the best cybersecurity certifications will open doors for the holder, wherever they are in the world, such as the internationally recognised CompTIA Security+ certifications. Alison provides a number of CompTIA+ options, including CompTIA Security+ SYO-501, which teaches students cybersecurity fundamentals and how to recognize threats.

Climbing Higher

There are many routes to consider as you pursue a career in information security. For those aiming for management positions, recognised certifications include CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional). Alison’s CISSP 2019 Diploma is among our top cybersecurity courses.

Excellent Prospects

Demand for cybersec professionals outstrips supply across the world with information system security managers and cybersecurity analysts being among the top-paying jobs in the sector. Generally, wages tend to be higher than the average employee, especially once you’ve established a good reputation.

Transferable Skills

With IT security skills in demand all over the world, from banks and businesses to government departments and industry, it’s easy to move and keep advancing your career - or go self-employed, the ultimate goal if setting your own fee and your own hours is in your future.
