Description

This course begins by discussing the different aspects of Roman architecture. You will look closely at the early buildings and monuments including the Temple of Portunus, the Colosseum, the Arch of Titus, the Column of Trajan, the Arch of Constantine, and the Basilica of Saint Sabina. Most importantly, you will study the Chartres Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, a famous Roman Catholic church in Chartres, France that marks the high point of French Gothic art.

You will then study works by architects such as Brunelleschi and Bernini during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. With this course, you will become familiar with the Orsanmichele, the Dome of the Cathedral of Florence, and the Laurentian Library all located in Florence, Italy; the Church of Il Gesu, San Carlo Alle Quattro Fontane, Saint Ignatius Chapel, and Sant'Andrea al Quirinale which can be found in Rome, Italy; and the Saint Peter's Basilica and Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City.
