This free online course on alternative energy sources will introduce you to the three main alternative energy sources that are available today. The first part of this course will look at fuel cells. You will study the rating system that is based on electrolytes, the operating temperature and the pros and cons of fuel cells. Farther into the course, you will learn why you should process a fuel cell to increase the percentage of hydrogen content. On top of this, you will study the methods used to process fuel and make it rich in hydrogen. You will study the feasibility of these processes in detail during this course.

In the second part of the course, you will learn about the historical evolution of fuel cells. The principle on which fuel cells works are illustrated and you will study the stages involved in converting this principle into a product. A fuel cell design that can actually deliver power to a specific application will be discussed and so are the limitations from the perspective of a residential or stationary application versus an automotive or mobile application. Later in the course, you will learn how to characterize electrochemical devices using the single point of operation mode and generating polarization curves. The polarization curve, its shape and the significance of the slope of said curve in different regions are analyzed in detail.

Finally, you will learn how to assemble or disassemble a single cell PEMFC hardware and the meaning and function of each component is explained in detail. You will compare the difference between a supercapacitor, a capacitor, and a battery. The structure and materials used to make a supercapacitor and their capabilities are listed and explained along with their applications. You will study the fundamental concepts of steering wheels and their principle of operation and function as an energy storage device. You will learn about a power generation technique called Magnetohydrodynamic Power Generation which will include an overview of how it works and its application to increase the efficiency of existing power plants.
