Reducing Recidivism

reducing-recidivismEducation is one of the most effective long-term strategies for reducing recidivism. By equipping individuals with relevant skills, confidence, and credentials, Alison helps create pathways away from repeated interaction with the justice system and toward meaningful employment and social reintegration. Research consistently shows that access to education during or after incarceration significantly lowers the likelihood of reoffending. A widely cited RAND Corporation meta-analysis found that incarcerated individuals who participate in educational programmes are 43% less likely to return to prison than those who do not receive education. In addition, participation in correctional education has been shown to increase the likelihood of post-release employment by around 13%, an important factor in helping individuals rebuild stable lives.

Education plays a crucial role in helping justice-involved individuals develop practical job skills, improve literacy and digital competence, and build the confidence needed to re-enter society successfully. For many people leaving prison, barriers such as limited formal qualifications, stigma, and lack of access to training can make employment difficult. By providing free, flexible online courses across fields such as business, technology, healthcare, communication, and entrepreneurship, Alison enables individuals to gain recognised credentials and develop skills aligned with real labour market needs. These opportunities help individuals transition from cycles of incarceration toward productive economic participation.

Beyond employment outcomes, education also contributes to personal development and behavioural change. Studies have shown that individuals who engage in structured learning programmes while incarcerated demonstrate improved problem-solving skills, stronger self-discipline, and higher levels of self-esteem — all factors associated with successful reintegration. By making education accessible to justice-involved individuals, Alison supports rehabilitation efforts that benefit not only the learner but also communities and society at large, contributing to safer communities and more effective justice systems.

Alison’s recidivism reduction and reintegration work spans several areas, aiming to support as many justice-impacted individuals as possible.

Alternative Sentencing: Educational pathways can play an important role in alternative sentencing frameworks. Courts and justice systems increasingly recognise that education and structured learning programmes can serve as constructive alternatives to incarceration for certain offences.

In Prison Learning: Education within correctional facilities is widely recognised as one of the most effective tools for rehabilitation. Alison’s digital learning platform can support structured educational programmes within prisons, enabling incarcerated individuals to develop knowledge, professional skills, and recognised credentials.

The Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) in Nigeria partnered with Alison to provide education and skills training to justice-impacted individuals, helping them rebuild their lives and overcome social marginalisation. Through Alison’s online learning platform, participants gain access to courses that develop practical workplace and life skills while participating in group learning environments that foster community support and personal confidence. The initiative demonstrates how compassion, opportunity, and accessible education can support rehabilitation and reintegration, enabling individuals to reclaim their futures and break cycles of exclusion.

Probation and Parole: For individuals on probation or parole, access to learning and skills training is critical to successful community reintegration. Alison provides probation and parole participants with opportunities to build job‑ready skills while fulfilling programme requirements.

At-Risk Intervention Programmes: Alison supports early intervention programmes aimed at individuals who are at risk of entering the justice system. Providing free access to education and employability skills can help individuals develop positive life pathways before criminal behaviour becomes entrenched.

Reentry Programmes: Successful reintegration into society following incarceration requires access to education, skills training, and employment pathways. Alison’s free learning platform provides individuals reentering society with practical tools to rebuild their lives and pursue meaningful careers.
