Ireland, 31 August 2020: Alison, one of the world’s largest free e-learning sites, releases findings from independent consumer research. The nationally representative survey delves into how Brits view the current education system in the UK and how they believe it fares compared to other nations.

The study uncovers some interesting insights. Despite the UK being one of the richest nations in the world, one third (33%) of Brits believe they are worse off than other countries when it comes to education. Younger people are the most unimpressed - 36% of 16-29-year olds think current learning methods are less favourable than other nations, compared to a quarter (25%) of people over the age of sixty.

Despite data which indicates that women are now more than a third more likely to go to university than men - it is in fact females who feel the most disheartened. 3% more women than men think other countries have a better approach to learning than the UK. It is not surprising then that over three-quarters (77%) of women are turning to e-learning, compared to this time last year, and 68% state the main attraction of learning online is the ability to fit it around their lifestyles.

Mike Feerick, CEO and founder of Alison.com comments, “The survey highlights some interesting findings and supports the need for an overhaul of our current education model – in its current form, it is not fit for purpose. As a result of the Coronavirus crisis many more students will be considering alternative options this year and university is not the only route to getting on the career ladder. The concept of traditional university is a dying beast and now is the time for governments and policymakers to completely rethink the sector. Students now have other routes open to them including work experience placements and e-learning. There is a further education revolution taking place and those who succeed in the future will embrace this tide of change today. Govt is wasting billions on supporting old models of learning - ignoring the transformative innovation going on across the sector. Politicians need to look beyond the old providers and see and learn for themselves about the innovation going on here in the UK and around the world.
