Alison has commissioned free online music lessons taught by top Traditional Irish musicians. Our tutors include all-Ireland champions and prestigious award winners, performers, recording artists and members of well-known bands such as Danú and Hermitage Green. Spearheading the project is Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, the face of Irish television station TG4’s live music broadcasting and granddaughter of the great Seán Ó Riada. This famous composer and music arranger did more than anyone to spark the revival of traditional Irish music in the 1960s which continues today. Doireann brings you certified courses at Beginner 1, Beginner 2 and Intermediate level in eight instruments: fiddle, guitar, bodhrán, flute, tin whistle, concertina, button accordion and sean-nós voice. Each course, filmed by fellow musician Liam O’Brien, begins with the basics of the instrument and quickly builds up to full tunes. Doireann Ní Ghlacáin takes up the bow for our fiddle lessons, while Nell Ní Chróinín, a TG4 Gradam Ceoil winner and singer with Danú, teaches our sean-nós singing courses. Conor Connolly, an all-Ireland champion and TG4 Young Musician of the Year is on the bellows for our button accordion courses. On guitar we have Michael McCague, of bands At the Racket, Téada and At First Light, while our bodhrán courses are taught by Dermot Sheedy, drummer with top Irish band Hermitage Green. Brian O'Loughlin, of the famous Shandrum Céilí Band, teaches our flute and tin whistle courses, with his brother Conor O'Loughlin, all-Ireland medal-winning member of The Conifers, rounding off the courses on concertina. They are the perfect grounding for you if you aspire to join the ranks of musicians at an impromptu session (or seisiún) or to simply learn to play some of the catchiest and most emotive tunes in the world. All the courses are video-based and enable you to go at a pace that works best for you. They also come with free notes to download, so that you can practise to your heart’s content. To begin, simply register for your Alison account, enrol for the course of your choosing and seize the day or as they say in Irish, ‘Tapaigh an deis’!
