Become an AffiliateAspiring Fighter Pilots must complete a bachelor's degree, preferably in a field related to aviation. Recommended high school subjects include STEM courses, particularly physics, mathematics, and computer science. Additionally, obtaining a Private Pilot License (PPL) can give you a comparative advantage.
Relevant work experience includes joining the civilian auxiliary of your country’s aviation program, flight schools, or local flying clubs for introductory lessons. Acquiring a PPL, participating in student government, sports teams, and seeking mentorship from aviation professionals can also be beneficial. Volunteering in aviation-related roles and attending military service academies are also recommended.
Fighter Pilots fly tactical aircraft to support military operations, ensure the safety of ground troops, engage in air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, surveillance, and humanitarian aid missions. They also perform ground jobs such as maintenance, operations, safety checks, and mission preparation. Additionally, they serve as leaders and role models for younger service members.
Important skills include aviation, aerospace engineering, operations, mathematics, and engineering. Other valuable skills are travel administration, programming, structural engineering, electrical engineering, technical support, and science. Physical fitness, leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and stress management are also crucial.
Fighter Pilots can advance to roles such as Flight Leads or Pilots-in-Command and may move into leadership positions in training, policy-making, or research and development. They can transition to civilian aviation jobs as Commercial Pilots, Helicopter Pilots, Flying Instructors, Test Pilots, or Managers. Skills gained as Fighter Pilots are also sought after in roles such as Aerospace Engineers, Project Managers, and Consultants.
