Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Aptitude Test?
An Aptitude Test is a standardised assessment designed to measure an individual's ability to perform specific tasks or respond to particular situations. It is popularly used in academic settings and as a pre-employment assessment tool to evaluate a person's inherent skills, strengths, and potential for success in various domains such as cognitive abilities, problem-solving, critical thinking, numerical reasoning, verbal comprehension and spatial awareness.
Alison’s Aptitude Test consists of three components: a Verbal, Numeric, and Abstract Test. The Verbal Test assesses your ability to understand and process written information, the Numeric Test evaluates your quantitative skills and ability to work with numbers, while the Abstract Test measures your problem-solving ability and capacity to understand complex concepts without relying on language and numbers. Although you can take each test separately, it is highly recommended to take all three and assess where you stand in each area.
Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Mechanical Reasoning. These test your ability and skills with language, numbers, problem-solving, objects and shapes and machines or physical systems. The first three are most in demand and are included in Alison’s free Aptitude Test.
Alison’s Aptitude Test is completely free and doesn’t require any preparation. All you'll need to do is to sign up/log in to Alison and have a stable internet connection. There is no fee to take this test or to access your detailed score report.
There is no one general aptitude test. The most common aptitude tests assess the participants’ understanding of language, basic math and problem-solving abilities. See how you measure up with Alison’s free Aptitude Test.
Yes and no. These tests are designed to ascertain your knowledge and problem-solving skills so it depends on how much you know before starting. The beauty of Alison’s Aptitude Test is that it helps you see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Then you can simply select the free courses you need to do and watch your skills - and your score - increase.
General aptitude questions focus on your underlying potential and ability to learn. In a verbal reasoning test, you might be asked to read a piece of text and then answer questions that show you understand the passage, that you can spot errors, or complete sentences. In a numerical reasoning test, you might be given a graph to analyse, some calculations and need to find the next number in a given sequence. Abstract Reasoning tests can involve solving visual puzzles, working out the next shape or pattern in a sequence or mentally rotating a 3D object and identifying one view from a different angle.
There is no particular test that is most common but undoubtedly, the most popular are the cognitive ability tests designed to measure core cognitive skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, information processing, and learning ability. The second most popular are the verbal and numerical reasoning tests, which are a subsection of cognitive ability tests.
You can retake the tests as many times as you wish to improve your score. Your score report reflects your score development through the last 5 attempts of your test. However, we also advise that you complete the recommended free courses suggested in your score report between attempts to give yourself the best opportunity to improve your score.
After completing each test you will immediately receive your individual Score Report. Your Score Report reflects both your overall percentage as well as your percentile score. The percentile score allows you to compare your performance to that of other test-takers in your country/worldwide. A higher percentile indicates a superior performance.
Yes, based on your test results, Alison will recommend courses tailored to strengthen any weak areas before your next attempt.
You can share your test scores by directly sharing your score report or your Alison profile on social media, showcasing your achievements to potential employers and your network.
Adding your Aptitude Scores to your Alison Profile highlights your commitment to learning and self-improvement, making your profile stand out to potential employers. It also helps you keep track of your progress over time as you take new courses and retake the tests. If you do not wish to show your scores on your Profile you have an option to hide it.
Yes, Alison offers free courses tailored to each skill set to help you prepare for the tests. These courses are suited to different learning styles and preparation levels.
We take privacy seriously and employ robust security measures to protect your test results and personal information. Your data is stored securely. Our privacy policy provides detailed information on how we handle and protect your data.
In addition to our Aptitude Test, Alison has a complete suite of free psychometric tests which includes the Workplace Personality Assessment & the Welliba Mental Health Assessment.
Alison worked alongside industry experts to ensure our Aptitude Test is in alignment with global professional quality standards. However, you must check with your specific organisation to confirm if they accept the Alison Aptitude Test as valid.
An important note about psychometric results in general is that although assessment developers aim for the measure to be as valid and consistent as possible, any data point from a psychometric assessment should be considered more of a soft score as opposed to a hard, fully objective and set number.
