Goal 3 is among the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals that aim to make the world more equitable and sustainable by 2030. Goal 3 aims to improve health and wellness in every nation, through raising healthcare standards, combating disease and tackling the causes of preventable deaths.
What are the priority areas of goal 3?
The UN has set out several priority areas for goal 3 which it aims to achieve by 2030. These include:
- Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births
- End preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age
- End the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases
- Reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being
- Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol
- Halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents
What is health and wellness?
There are several components to achieving a sense of wellbeing or wellness. These include physical activity along with a sense of purpose, feeling connected to other people, learning new skills or subjects, being mindful and aware of your life and being kind or giving. All of these boost our sense of satisfaction with life.
