If you own or manage a salon, there are some things you will need to do to make sure that everything runs smoothly. For example, on a daily basis you will need to make sure that the salon is kept clean and sanitary, as the level of hygiene required in a salon, is different from that in a clothing or book store. Unlike a clothing or book store, you can’t wait until the end of the night to clean up and then go home. You will need to clean and reset the equipment and environment throughout the day. Managing a salon is more like managing a hairdressers or a doctor’s surgery. You will also need to keep accurate records for each client. Another factor you will need to consider when managing a salon, is the hiring of staff. If you are in charge of the appointments and schedule, you will need to know when the most people will come in, so that you can schedule enough people to handle the work throughout the day. You may need to make sure that you have staff available to perform other services as well. For example, maybe waxing or hair or nails and makeup is required. Perhaps there is someone on staff to perform all these duties during the day, or perhaps clients need to book an appointment for a particular day or time to receive certain services. Another duty of the manager, is to oversee health and safety and to ensure that sanitary procedures are being followed. You need to make sure that workstations are reset, tools are properly sanitized, employees are washing their hands and common areas are being wiped down. In this way, you are ensuring the health and safety of your staff and your clients. You also need to make sure that employees are following proper procedures when it comes to performing services and dealing with clients. This will include recording every sale, filling out consultation cards, giving after care instructions and booking the next appointment. It is important to track your salon's inventory and make sure that it is matching the sales. You will also need to set prices for services, push certain products and choose which products to display. In addition to health, safety and human resources issues, you may also be responsible for the business part of the operation. When it comes to advertising your business, it's important to remember that referrals or recommendations by existing clients, are very important. Utilize this resource by advertising through your clients. For example, offer discounts for referrals, gift cards and other incentives for spreading the word. Running a business, you will need to market yourself and your services. Hold promotions, put ads in the newspapers, on television and on radio. Participate in sponsorships, shows and events. But most of all, get out and talk to people. The best way to advertise your business is to be out there in person. There are other salons offering the same services as you, so you will need to set yourself apart and gain a competitive advantage. Are you the cheapest? Do you offer the best quality service? Or are you in the most convenient location for customers? Consider sending out flyers around a certain area. Identify the places where people will be looking for your services, for example bridal and prom stores. Find out about events that will be happening in an area and try to advertise your services there. Connect with a hair salon or a salon that offers different services. Allow them to advertise in your shop, if you can advertise in their shop. In the age of computers, apps and social media, find creative ways to get your clients to help you advertise and spread your brand.
