When it comes to creating a look, it is important for the makeup to match the hairstyle. The makeup artist and the hair stylist need to work together to create the look. In this topic we examine different hairstyles that you may be working with. Edgy: It's a good idea to pair an "edgy" hairstyle, with cool tone or metallic makeup styles. These looks are designed to be edgy and to attract the attention to a single feature. If the focus is on the mouth of the model, then an edgy hairstyle that falls on the face is fine, as the mouth is still visible. However, if the focus is the eyes, they can't be covered or distracted by the hair. An edgy look can be a bit "out there" and not as tamed as some other looks. For shorter hair, this can include spikey and wild hair. If the client’s hair is edgy, the makeup will not be soft, using warm colours. Edgy styles are more suited to cold tones, such as greens, blues and purples. Sophisticated: When it comes to a "sophisticated" hairstyle, this pairs nicely with warm tone makeup styles. The hair falling around the face looks nice with this style. However, a partial up and down style may be the perfect match. If the client has short hair, it may work better to keep it brushed down flat against the face. A high bun or pony tail also works great with the warm tone makeup styles. When the hair style has a softer and more sophisticated look, you will want to use soft colors, such as deep reds, browns and oranges. These will create a softer look for your client. To add a little edge to the sophisticated look, create a pale face with minimal color and deep red lips. Retro: If you are using a "retro" makeup style, you will want to match this with a retro hair-do, whether it’s a bob or a beehive or something else. It's important to make sure that the makeup style and the hair-do are from the same decade, so that it completes the look. Before you start the work, both you and the hair stylist, need to come up with a plan. It may be a good idea to sketch out a look first. If you are not able to sketch it out, consider using a computer software program. Many makeup artists learn how to do several hair styles, so they can give their clients a package deal. Many hair stylists also learn how to apply makeup. Often clients like to get their hair and their makeup done together. Once you know the hair style, you will be able to decide on the proper makeup to accentuate and match that style. If you're not sure what style the hair will be, you can still create a look for your client, based on where they will be going or what they will be doing. Make sure that you know the look the client is going for, before you put the time and effort in and to ensure that your client is not disappointed with the results.
