Brushes come in various sizes. You may want to keep a notebook that records information about various brushes you have tried and the results. You can purchase different size brushes and keep track of the ones that worked for you and the ones that didn’t. Makeup brushes come in standard sizes and are usually numbered. The brand of brush makes a big difference. Some brushes are made using better materials. There are times when you will need a synthetic brush and times when you will need a natural brush. Learn which brands you trust. Try out brushes from different brands. Record the brand, size and other comments in your notebook. Note the type of materials the brush is made of. The shape of a brush has a huge bearing on what it can be used for. A smaller rounded brush can get into little crevices. A flat brush is good for applying foundations. An angled brush is effective for creating a clean look. The length of the bristles is important. There are short and longer bristled brushes. The longer ones will likely have more flexibility. The denseness of the brush is important too. If the bristles are dense, they are less flexible and will create a denser coverage. A fluffy brush is not good for applying foundation, but is perfect for polishing the look afterwards. A small dense brush is perfect for eyeshadow and concealer. You will notice that these brushes have denser bristles. That is because they are used to draw the line or go over it with colour. The proper use of a foundation brush is important, because if it isn’t used properly, it will give an unpolished look to your client. It can be tricky to apply foundation correctly. You will need to blend it into dry spots, slide it over oily sections and cover every crease and crevice. Start by preparing the face for the application of the foundation. Wash the face and pat it dry. Apply a lightweight moisturizer and allow it to dry for a few minutes. Add a foundation primer with the hands or a small foundation brush. Make sure that it is an even coat and let it dry. Add a concealer under the eyes if needed, with a small foundation brush. You can also use a concealer brush or an eye shadow brush. Make sure to dab the concealer until it blends in - don't tap it. When using a liquid foundation, pour a little on the back of your hand. Use your foundation brush to pick up some of it. Use one side of the brush for a light cover and both sides for a fuller cover. Apply the foundation down the centre of the face and then blend it outwards towards the hair line. This will prevent makeup lines from forming. Broad downward strokes should be used to apply the foundation to the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. The tapered edge of the brush can be used to get in to the hard to reach spots along the hair line and around the eyes and nose. Let the foundation dry and then look for lines. If you see any lines, use a clean brush to blend them in. Use small, circular motions to blend them in.
