Sort
 
Sort literally means to categorize things or different articles. However, in the case of 5S, it means to categorize needed and unneeded items and eventually removing everything that is not needed in the area. The sorting process includes going into every corner or a narrow part of the area, all corners, cabinets, enclosed spaces, drawers, and shelves. 
 
Sorting is implemented through a red tag event when the 5S team walk through the subject area with available red tags and label any article which they believe unwanted in that space. All those items are then shifted to the designated red tag area for further disposition.
