Introduction to Bolt Connections
 
The design of a bolt connection depends on: 
Arrangement of bolts and platesMode of load transmissionNature and location of the load
In order to find the strength of a bolt, it is important to find the type of failure that may occur with the bolt. The failure of a bolt connection may occur due to the failure of the bolt or the failure of the plate.
Possible modes of failure in bolt connections:
Shear failure of the boltShear failure of the plateBearing failure of the bolt
Bearing failure of the plateTensile failure of boltsTensile failure of the plate
 
To design a bolt connection, the following must be considered:Types of connections | types of load that may act of the connection | strength of the bolt.
Design of ordinary Black Bolts
Two types of bolts are commonly used: Ordinary black bolt and High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolt.
In the design of ordinary black bolts, the strength of the bolt for different failure criteria should be determined.
The design of ordinary black bolts has to be designed under shear, tension, bearing of the bolt, and tension of the plate.
Design of High Strength Friction Grip Bolts
The high strength friction grip bolt is used when the external force is quite high. In calculating the design strength of high strength friction grip bolt, friction must be considered.
The design of a high strength friction grip bolt is exactly similar to bearing type of bolt except for the friction.
