The Role of Editors

Editors have the authority to change a journalists copy without consultation.

Newspaper editors assign the stories, they edit the written text and they supervise the design and layout of pages.

An accuracy check is the first level of copy-editing.

Coaching is a way for editors to help journalists solve a story’s problems independently.

In newspapers and newsrooms, editors write headlines and captions for photos.

Editorial Manipulation

Journalists need to be bound by strict editorial ethics to ensure that they are not manipulated or used.

It’s important to look at the various dynamics that can exist between a journalist and a politician.

An important question for political journalists is about the distance they maintain from the politicians they're writing about.

Constructive journalism, could be used to manipulate, control and force journalists to applaud rather than investigate.

Producers, Sub-editors and Bias

Producers ensure that all significant angles are followed up, and investigated.

News producers ensure that the appropriate value is added to the story based on audience needs and strategic business logic.

Journalists must strive for fairness and decisions made on the basis of news value.

A process of checks and balances can be set up within the newsroom itself in order to correct imbalance in reporting.

The opinions of the editorial columns should not interfere with the process of news gathering.

An enterprising reporter might arrange to get an advance copy of the speech so he can be more aware of how the speech is delivered. Indeed, the reporter can write much of the story prior to the actual speech.

Reporters must be cautious, however, for the speaker who discards his speech for another, or for speakers who make important impromptu remarks during the course of their speeches.
