Digital Media and Methodology

Blogs, Audio and Podcasting

A blog helps a journalist publish information outside of the traditional news cycle.

The goal in blogging is to write tight and be quick. Get to the point immediately, but be conversational.

Have an understanding of the different types of digital file formats.

Tips for a voice over: write a script, prepare your voice, use operative words and maintain a conversational tone.

Podcasting is the distribution of audio files over the Internet.

Digital Media and Methodology

Graphics, Photos and Video

The use of graphics should enhance the reader/viewer’s understanding of the story.

Graphics need to be used transparently and accurately.

Pictures are information, so the addition of photographs is just good journalism.

The visuals tell the “what” of the story. The words tell the “why.”

There are two types of video assignments:

• A documentary style video story
• A breaking news/news clip style
Untitled Slide
An enterprising reporter might arrange to get an advance copy of the speech so he can be more aware of how the speech is delivered. Indeed, the reporter can write much of the story prior to the actual speech.

Reporters must be cautious, however, for the speaker who discards his speech for another, or for speakers who make important impromptu remarks during the course of their speeches.
