Copper Pipe Hangers and Supports

Pipe Hangers and Supports
Hangers and supports are designed to hold and support pipes in either a horizontal or a vertical position.

Importance of hangers and supports:
• All pipes must be installed and supported so that both the pipe and its joints remain leak-proof.

• Improper support can cause the piping system to sag. This causes stress on the pipe and fittings and, over time, increases the chance of breaks or leaks in the piping system.

• Without proper support, the drainage pipe can shift from its proper angle and form traps. These traps fill with liquid and solid wastes that block the pipeline.

Pipe Hangers and Supports
Specifications for hangers and supports are determined by the following factors. Click on each number to know more:

1. Combined weight of the pipe fittings and valves

2. Maximum weight of the contents that the pipe might carry

3. Material (wood, concrete, steel) the hanger will be attached to

4. Distance from the anchor point to the pipe

5. Potential for corrosion between the hanger and the pipes, fittings, or valves

6. Expansion and contraction of the piping system

7. Vibration of the equipment attached to the piping system

Pipe Attachments:
A pipe attachment is the part of a hanger that touches or connects directly to the pipe. It may be designed for either heavy duty or light duty, covered (insulated), or plain pipe.

Hangers are used for horizontal or vertical support of pipes. The main purpose of hangers and brackets is to keep the piping in alignment and prevent it from bending or distorting.

Connectors:
The connector section of the hanger is the part that links the pipe attachment to the structural attachment. Connectors can be divided into two groups: rods and bolts, and other rod attachments.

Structural Attachments:
Structural attachments are used to anchor the pipe hanger assembly securely to the structure. Structural attachments include threaded drop-in anchors, plastic or lead mollies, toggles, C-beam clamps, pound-in nail anchors, wedge anchors, threaded rods, and strut channels.
