a social worker who has specialization in mental health can work better
The inclusion of Mental Health Social Workers is an improvement of the narrow rigidity of the Medical Model alone and can present a more holistic view of Mental Health. Social Workers do have critical roles to play, one being public education on the reality surrounding mental health. While their presence in the hospital setting is a great improvement they need to be active in all life domains, education from primary school upwards and promoting that difference is not bad. They need to have access to the workplace and Mental Health be included in all OH&S programs. They need a presence in Law Enforcement and Correctional Facilities. Only when people are better informed and mental Illness is seem as just another health condition will it receive the attention and resources needed to support people across all life domains.
I think that what they have in Scotland with mental health is a good system, but may not be available in the rest of the country.
