The four outcomes are: Know the travel and tourism component industries and their organisations Understand the role of travel and tourism organisations and their interrelationships Know the developments that have shaped the present day travel and tourism sector Understand how trends and factors are currently affecting the travel and tourism sector To view more information about each learning outcome you can click on the links above or simply scroll down. 1. Know the travel and tourism component industries and their organisations Back to Top The tourism industry is split into smaller industries called component industries. Each of these component industries has a number of different types of organisations. For example one component industry is transport. It includes organisations such as airlines, airports, coach companies, sea ferry companies etc. This type of industry gives people opportunities to work in their own region eg airports, coach companies or travel abroad eg airlines, cruise ships. 2. Understand the role of travel and tourism organisations and their interrelationships Back to Top The organisations in travel and tourism have many different aims. Most are there to make money but not all. Some organisations have different aims. The tourist boards for example are there to promote tourism in different regions. Some visitor attractions are there to be culturally or environmentally responsible, eg Ulster American Folk Park, National Trust. Other organisations such as ABTA are there to make sure other organisations do things properly and abide by the laws. You also need to know how these organisations work together. For example, a tour operator such as Thomson creates a package holiday. A travel agent then sells that package holiday to the customer. These days some tour operators run their own travel agencies. 3. Know the developments that have shaped the present day travel and tourism sector Back to Top The travel and tourism industry has developed very quickly. In the space of 50 years it has gone from nothing to be the biggest industry in the world. You need to know what has helped it achieve this. You will know about how transport systems have changed over the years. New aeroplanes have helped take more people on holiday. New technology such as reservation systems and the Internet have had a huge impact on the industry. Recently our own lifestyles have changed the way the industry operates. 4. Understand how trends and factors are currently affecting the travel and tourism sector Back to Top A trend is something that happening currently or recently. These trends are sometimes affected by other factors. For example, recently the pound(£) has become very weak. This means that holidays in Europe are more expensive. This has led to a recent trend of staying at home for your holidays. Another trend recently was for people to take shorter holidays but take them more often. Factors that influenced this were cheap flights, and online booking. This however may be changing as the recession has meant people cannot afford lots of holidays.
