Project Maths: Strand 1 - Probability and Statistics
Statistics - Types of data – Numerical Data
Types of data – Numerical Data
Data can only have a finite number of values
Data can assume an infinite number of values between any two given
values. Students height may be 1.4325 m
No. of peas in a pod, age in years (as opposed to age)
Height, arm span, foot length
Bar chart, Pie chart, Line plot, Stem plot
Types of numerical data
Numerical data can be further divided into two categories:
* continuous data - data that may take any value within a certain range.
This is generally data obtained by measurement. Examples: weight, time
spent waiting in a queue, temperature
* discrete data - data that may take one of a limited range of numbers.
Discrete data frequently use whole number values. Examples: number of
children in a family, time recorded to the nearest quarter of an hour,
number of runs scored by a cricket team
