The bedside exam is a 'ritual' composed of special spaces and tools, ceremonial clothes and mysterious aspects and terminology. The patient identity is also very important. It involves a transformation from the delivery of the story by the patient to the validation of the story by the doctor. Better technology however creates lazier bedside exams and can actually then take longer and to worse diagnosis.

An explanation on the "ritual" of a Physician, which is actually another term for the 'bedside examination' which patients undergo when they consult a Physician. Its known as a "ritual" because all the aspects are more traditional and necessary than people may think. The patient is firstly examined in a specialized space, done on a specialized bed. The office is also decorated with different kinds of objects. The examination requires the use of a 'ceremonial garb' which is actually the gown used by the patient. The exam then commences, which is a 'mysterious exam' , and the point of where the exam is concentrated on, is always the thing which the patient initially complained about,e.g. if the patient complained about a tummy ache, the Physician would examine and concentrate greatly on that area. Patient identity is also quite an important step in the bedside exam. The patient firstly describes the problem to the Physician, which is known as a 'story' and the Physician then goes ahead to validate and diagnose the patient as accurately as possible.
